A pricing option for bundle-only products

I have a Cairn supplement that I wrote solely for the purpose of including it in charity bundles. I do not want to sell or otherwise distribute this item in any way, save as an item in charity bundles. Currently, this is possible on Itch by changing the Public Access Settings to “Disable new downloads & purchases”. That allows me to add the item to bundles, but disables the purchase button. Anyone who buys a bundle that includes the item is able to download it, but no one is able to buy or download it separately.

AFAIK, this is currently not possible on RPG Trader, which requires a Pricing Tier before publishing, and requires Pricing Tiers to be either Free or Paid. There are workarounds that can get me part-way to the functionality, but not altogether exclude downloads or purchases. The simplest way, it seems to me, would be a pricing tier option that disables pricing and limits downloads to owners.

I’d be open to other solutions, if better ones are available.

Thanks for posting this!

Since you asked about this on Mastodon earlier this week, we have been thinking about how we can implement this kind of thing, and we have recently pushed two updates that make it easy to do:

Creator-only tiers can be added to bundles

This is useful if you have a product available for purchase, but you have a special tier that is only for bundles. I suspect this will be the one that meets your needs the best.

When setting up a pricing tier you can select to have it only available for the author and collaborators to purchase. Up until now, you couldn’t add those tiers to bundles, but now you can! So you can make a pricing tier that only you (as the author) can see, but it’s still available for use in bundles.

Unique URL access for private products

This is useful if you have a product that is only for bundles, and you don’t want anyone to be able to see or purchase it otherwise.

We’ve had the option to make products private since launch - this makes sure they’re only available by the direct URL, and they don’t show up anywhere else on the site. You can already add these to bundles, but the product would then be visible to buyers afterwards who could then share it with other people.

With the recent update, you can now also require private products to be accessed by a unique link:

Products that are private like this will show up in bundles, but they won’t like back to the product from the bundle page, and if you add the unique URL requirement, no one will be able to access the product page without it, even if they purchased it within a bundle.

We’ll document these features soon, but in the meantime, let me know how this helps you!

I believe that covers it. Just to clarify: Add in a creator-only tier to a bundle makes it act like a purchased item for anyone who purchases that bundle, correct? And marking it private keeps everyone else from being able to purchase it separately?

Yes, exactly  So you can make the full product private, or keep it a public product, but make the pricing tier private. Either way, you can still add it to a bundle.
