Worth placing a limit on some tags?

I was browsing listings today and came across this listing: RPG Trader

It was confusing, because I was filtering my results to a specific game, and this book didn’t strike me as relevant to that game. Rather, it seems system neutral more than anything else.

However, the creator appears to have added every single game system as the book’s system, so that it would appear no matter what system people filtered by.

I could be wrong, but this strikes me as an incorrect usage of the tagging system.

I don’t think anyone is interested in policing tags that closely, but maybe it’s reasonable to limit some categories to only have, say, 5 options selected?

Thanks for flagging that product - we have updated it to use System neutral and contacted the author about it.

We haven’t wanted to put caps on any taxonomies so as not to limit things too much, but this kind of thing is definitely not how it is intended to work and you’re right that it is an incorrect usage of the tagging system.

We’ll consider the options here and decide what will work best - limiting to a maximum number per taxonomy isn’t a bad option.

From experience in other platforms and communities, I can say, however, that one of the problems with giving a limit for anything like this is that many people see it as a target rather than a limit. They then aim to hit that target when they would likely have used fewer tags if there was no limit given.

I came across another one today that tagged itself as being for 34 systems, despite the description saying it is system neutral: Veil Broken on RPG Trader

I can understand the thought process by which someone might do this: “These are all the games on this site that I can see someone using this content for”. But at some point, it starts to feel, to me, like it’s a mild abuse of the system.

Thanks - we have remedied that product, and will consider some restrictions here. It’s unlikely that one module would be available for more than 5 games (for example) before it would be considered system neutral, so I think that would be a reasonable restriction for that taxonomy in particular.
